Hosting a kids birthday party in the winter

Tips to hosting a birthday party during the winter.

Are you looking to have a big themed birthday party? Thinking about how to host a dozen kids out of your living room?  Here is some ideas and tips to help celebrating your child’s big day but indoors.

At home - Now depending on the size of your home there is a definite limit to how many kids you can have racing throughout your house.  I usually see at parties that 8-12 kids seem to be the magic number when hosting a party at home. If happening in the living room, make sure you remove your coffee table or move back couches to the walls especially if you’re hiring an entertainer to come.  It will give the kids space to move freely. Create activities in other areas of your house to utilize your space and lessen any stuffy, cooped up feelings.

The local rec center – If you have bigger ideas in mind try renting a room at your local center. You will be surprized how affordable renting a room for two hours. Keep in mind when kids are given a bigger space they often can become more physical and be bouncing off the wall. Having carefully planned activities is important with a bigger space.  Also be sure to book far enough in advanced as weekends taken up quickly.

Amenity rooms - These are great if you have one for your building. They are usually free to use but make sure to book several weeks before the event. If you don’t have one ask your friend they are quite easy to book and friends always love to show off their building.

Other considerations are play centers, bowling alleys and movie theaters.

Tomboy birthday parties.

There are certain girls that are just not into your traditional girl like things like fairies, pixies or princess. They don’t play Barbie’s or dress up in pink puffy dresses. These tomboys can be quite difficult to throw a birthday party for.

As a birthday entertainer myself I often receive calls to perform at all girl parties as a wizard or Jedi. This increasing trend seems to be growing more as female heroine characters show up in movies like Jedi, Hunger Games and Lord of the Rings and so on.

Here are some good ideas I have seen for parents with birthday parties for tomboys ages 5-7years.

1.       Super Hero party – Girl’s love dressing up even if it is a cape and mask. There is many girl superhero’s that wear masks like Cat women, Bat women etc. Also there is a lot of free printable’s out there for masks of many colors.  Pink, purple or green are popular for girls.

2.       Girl Jedi party – A new trend that girls are into is Star Wars.  Several Star Wars cartoons out now have girl Jedi in them using lightsabers. Making robes and cutting noodles in half for lightsabers make for a fabulous Jedi Training party.

3.       Harry Potter party- There are several powerful girl wizards in the Harry Potter movies. Making wands out of rolled up paper make for a great wand also take away gift. Girls love to create potions, so creating your own potions class is fabulous too. You can find many safe kids potions on the internet.

I hope this gives you a start to creating your own birthday for the special tomboy in your life.
It really seems to be an upcoming trend that can be very hard to find ideas for on the internet.

The Owner of Young Wizards Academy

About Marty at Young Wizards Academy

While working for the school board as a special educational assistant for 8 years I loved working with kids but never got to be my silly fun self. Due to the school environment being a place of learning it leaves very little for one to have their self-expression and creativity come out.  I felt a sort of depression creep in to my life with this line of work. I was at the end of a long string of unfulfilling jobs that seemed to be taking me further and further from where I wanted to go, so  ended up making a huge drastic change and dropped everything career wise and travelled to oil sands to drive a Haul Truck in a completely 180 career change.  It was a crazy move but when you are searching for your dream you dare to try new things and become driven to do things differently.

It was a short lived venture as my personality was obviously not the right fit in the trucking industry and I rarely was able to spend time with my family but not all was lost.  As a trucker you spend a lot I mean a lot of time alone with yourself and in my case I do incredible amount of processing of my life when I am alone. The last few months working as a trucker was the most creative in my life, I wrote pages and pages of really cool activities and stories that capture kids imagination thus my business was born.  I came back to live a new life creating a children’s entertainment business that highlights imagination and  creativity that kids have for a short window of their life.

Marty Carew, a resident of Port Coquitlam and a former haul truck driver from the oil sands is the owner/operator of the new and innovative birthday entertainment company and website youngwizardsacademy.com.  Marty is currently enrolled in the Self Employment Program at Douglas College, learning the ins and outs of business ownership! Marty absolutely believes that having a healthy imagination can empower anyone to know want they want to be in life and help them find creative ways to deal with life’s incredible difficult challenges.
